Spiderkit’s paw was lifted in the air, balancing the delicate spider that crawled about it. Many cats were afraid of these little insects, but not Spiderkit. She didn’t understand why. She also didn’t understand why her mother would name her after something others feared. It seemed like a rude thing to do.
Quickly getting bored, she sighed and flicked the spider off. She noticed it crawl to the paws of another feline, and wondered how they’d react.
There was once a time, a time before Ferndrop was even born, where the clans were big and the kits were plentiful. Now things were bleak and dying. The clans were small, and their hope dwindling. TreeClan was lucky to have the kits they did and would be even luckier if half of them made it to adulthood. It was for that very reason it was almost hard to miss one of the kits when they were out and about.
The leader made her way over to said kit-- she couldn't really help herself. There was an innocence about them. Kits didn't care that she was a leader, they just cared that she was who she was. No sooner than when she had sat down the small bug the kit had been playing with, a spider, was flung onto her paws. She froze for a moment before gently brushing off the insect with her tail.
Spiderkit watched in interest as the other cat simply brushed the spider off, almost nonchalantly. This cat wasn’t afraid. Spiderkit trailed her eyes up the other’s body, wondering who the paw belonged to. Her eyes widened. Of course this cat wasn’t fearful. It was the leader.
She hobbled closer on her unstable kitten legs, plopping herself down in front of Ferndrop. ”Hi.”
If one thing could cheer any cat up it would be the sight of a small kitten trying to walk. Ferndrop's somewhat cold heart melted. Names weren't always her forte, but she was pretty sure this kitten was Spiderkit. The larger cat purred as she bent her head down to talk to the kit.
"Hello. How are you doing today?" Her tone was soft and her eyes bright with amusement.
Spiderkit perked her ears in delight, wanting to listen closer to the she-cat’s purr. It was so loud and warm. Her own purr was weak and small- it sounded like a fly buzzing by. She hoped one day she’d have a purr as strong as Ferndrop’s.
”I’m bored.” She sighed dramatically, plopping over on her side. Her eyes were drawn to Ferndrop’s tail, which was quickly met with one of the kit’s paws. The tail reminded her of some kind of moss-ball to play with. It was like Spiderkit had forgotten who the tail was attached to.
"Well, we can't have one of our future warriors being bored! We'll have to fix this immediately." Ferndrop watched at the small kit batted at her tail, her expression fond. She flicked her tail back and forth to try and make a game of it.
Watching Spiderkit chase after her tail reminded Ferndrop of her own days as a kit where she did much of the same thing. As she aged she had been mortified by those memories, thinking she had made a fool of herself, but experiencing it now gave her a different view. It was endearing. Yes, it had the potential to get annoying after a while, but the simple act of it was just so... pure.
Spiderkit flipped on her back at Ferndrop's words, paws lifted in the air. She looked at the leader curiously. "What shall we do?" She asked, tail swishing the ground as she waited. With all of Ferndrop's moons of experience, she was sure she knew of many games. That was what made playing with warriors more fun- they had way more ideas than kits did.
"Hmm..." Ferndrop titled her head in contemplation. It had been moons since she last played a game or really had the creativity to come up with one. Perhaps she could do something like training, but toned down? "Well, we could play battle or play hunting." Not necessarily creative, but they were things she knew well.
Spiderkit hopped up and gave a nod. This could give her a head-start before apprenticeship. "I want to practice battle!" She exclaimed, lowering herself into a pouncing position. She was determined to become the greatest fighter TreeClan had ever seen. She looked up at Ferndrop expectantly, awaiting instructions.
Ferndrop flicked her tail across the kit's back and said, "I thought you might." Ferndrop walked back a few paces from Spiderkit. Her body was loose and her eyes trained on the small she-cat. She didn't lower her body to the ground, but rather remained standing, though she kept a slight sway to her movements. "Attack me."
