The shining sun cascaded from the heavens, warming Lionfur's face. It gave the young leader a golden hue, his long fur smoothed down and freshly cleaned. He leaned his head back slightly and blinked open his eyes, adjusting to the brightness of his den. The heat and humidity of the day was horrible, however he tried to ignore it as he remembered he was due to take his new apprentice, Lupinepaw out. The warriors of the clan had been busy lately, with food scarce and TreeClan pushing at the border, there were hunting and border patrols one after the other. So, to ease his mind, Lion decided to take on one of the older apprentices, who was almost finished with training.
They were getting a late start to their day, but hopefully it would have given Lupinepaw enough time to eat something, Lion himself skipping breakfast to save whatever was left for the kits and queens.
Lion caught Lupine's eye after spotting him near the apprentices den, beckoning him with his tail to follow behind. He didn't check to see if had had listened, just assumed, for the kid might have been bored out of his mind listening to complaining warriors and whining kits all day. And although Lion was also frustrated with the hardships the clan was experiencing, he was tired of everyone whining about it, too.
The IceClan leader smiled softly once the faint scent of bluebells hit him, breathing it in slowly. He stopped walking once they were at a small clearing, a couple trees shading them, though they were mostly surrounded by the sweet smelling flowers. Lion cleared his throat before speaking, looking over his shoulder to blink twice at Lupinepaw.
"You are my new apprentice, however, you've been an apprentice for a while. I refuse to waste our time going over the warriors code, or giving you a tour of the land. It is much more important for us to work on your hunting and fighting skils." Lion paused, smirking slightly at Lupinepaw. Cats had told him about how much the tom enjoyed a good fight, and Lion was prepared to honor that. "Why don't we start with a spar? Perhaps the loser hunts the winners dinner, eh?"
lupinepaw might have appeared content, seated outside the apprentices' den, but the expression that contorted his features was one of almost pained boredom and the flick of his tail one of unadulterated restlessness. the iceclanner hated the heat, hated lying around, hated doing nothing. he wanted a cold he had never known, wanted to make himself useful, wanted to do something. but there was no snow, no patrols for him to go on, and no prey. only the air of malaise that arose from the mundanity of monotony, clinging to lupinepaw and everyone around him like a colourless cocoon.
the apprentice blinked as a pair of umber-hued eyes met his, accompanied by a movement of the tail that might have been a summons. the instant he registered who they belonged to, he pushed himself up onto his paws, a foolishly toothy smile threatening to curl up on his muzzle. perhaps lionfur was impressed by something that he had done; perhaps the leader was recognising the beginnings of his skill in battle, the bravado he wore like a bird's plumage - his heart sank. perhaps dawnflower had told lionfur of lupinepaw's failed attempt to steal herbs, and dawnflower and lupinepaw had a very different idea of what a strict warning was.
lupinepaw did not speak as they made their way to an open space in the forest. the apprentice parted his jaws slightly, scenting the area. a small smile flitted across his maw at the pleasant perfume of the surrounding flora. he glanced up at lionfur only as the latter spoke, the apprentice's liquid grey eyes brimming with curiosity. "excellent," grinned lupinepaw as lionfur stated he would not be teaching him the warrior code or how to navigate the territory. "and agreed," he added. "my hunting skills need a lot of work. fighting? not so much." boasting was the apprentice's first mistake.
the second one was when he dropped to the ground, body falling into a crouch with the ease of repeated rehearsal. his tail flicked out behind him in a movement both fluid and abrupt - a warning, perhaps, or a premature signal of victory. "you're on," he said at once, and with far too much confidence. a soft growl laced the words, but the spark in his storm-hued gaze was amiable.
You saved me! Just let me be someone who deserves it.
"My hunting skills need a lot of work. Fighting? Not so much." Stated the apprentice, much to Lionfur's surprise. He wouldn't have expected such an inexperienced and young cat to have such unreasonable confidence, though he could relate to it. Lionfur saw his younger self mirrored in Lupinepaw's boastful tone and bold movements. It allowed a grin to make it's way onto Lion's lips, as he watched the tom-cat assume an amateur battle position. "You're on." Lion chuckled softly at those words, lowering his body to the ground.
Then, suddenly and without warning, he swiftly pounced at Lupinepaw, claws unsheathed, aiming to knock him over. As soon as he would have knocked Lupine away, Lion would land a few tail lengths back, out of reach.
—— ayy he's good for something other than getting beat up
lupinepaw had thought he was prepared, and so a smirk flitted across his features the instant before lionfur moved, the instant when he saw muscle harden beneath the density of an iceclanner's fur, the instant that claws slid forth from their sheathes. he was prepared enough that he had the time to brace himself for the collision, but he wasn't so prepared for its sheer impact. it was as if the better part of his breath had been yanked from his lungs, the lack of oxygen splintering all forethought, all preparation, leaving only pure, primal instinct.
it was difficult, but the apprentice managed to will himself not to gasp for the breath he so urgently needed. instead, he clambered to his paws in stubborn silence, heart thudding in every place but his chest and adrenaline flooding through every place but the ones that needed it. "nice try," lupinepaw grinned, feeling a sort of senseless pride that he hadn't completely betrayed his shock. he resisted the urge to wince as the pain fully set in, instead flashing ivory incisors in an expression half-smile, half-snarl.
the tom lurched forward in a rapid run, seemingly attempting to do to lionfur what the latter had done to lupinepaw. it was at the very last heartbeat - when he could feel lionfur's breath - that he would dart to the left, tail lashing out behind him like a flag. for a brief moment, only two of his paws were on the ground; his forepaws were set firmly upon the earth as he swung his hind legs towards lionfur in an attempt to slam them into his chest or at least flank with considerable force.
