Cloversnap padded into camp, having just returned from a leisurely stroll. She tried to do this as often as she could. Taking walks were a good way to cleanse her mind. Gazing across the camp, a cat to the far side of the clearing caught her eye. 'Sirensea.' She couldn't tell what she was doing, but it looked like she was alone. 'The leader, alone? This is the perfect time for someone to launch an attack.' Fearful at the thought, she quickly made her way over. If someone were to fight Sirensea right here and now, they'd have to get through Cloversnap first.
Her eyes darted left and right, trying to find any troublemakers. No one looked suspicious. She breathed a sigh of relief once she reached the other she-cat. "Hello. Is everything okay?"
at cloversnap's arrival, the velvet of sirensea's ears wavered and the gossamer of her whiskers twitched, as though they were fragile leaves caught by the faintest of zephyrs. a smile of greeting flitted across the she-cat's features as their gazes met, though surprise flickered there at the speed and urgency with which cloversnap approached her.
the leader's eyes followed cloversnap's as they flicked from side to side, searching for something sirensea could not see - as if suspicious of the surroundings themselves. "yes, everything's okay," was sirensea's response. shifting her slender body to the side to make room for cloversnap, she blinked warmly at the warrior. "what about you? you seem... on edge. is something wrong?"
A look of uneasiness flashed across Cloversnap's face once Sirensea answered. Even if something were wrong, she doubted the leader would say anything. Cloversnap had always perceived her as cool and collected no matter what, so it'd seem out of character if she fretted. Noticing the now available space, she checked her surroundings once more before gingerly taking a seat next to her clanmate.
"On edge? Of course I'm on edge. Aren't you afraid someone's out to get you?" She asked, her eyes filled with worry as she looked at the slender feline. "I'd be cautious if I were you. I sense negative energy in the warriors' den, and it worries me." A gust of wind rustled a few nearby leaves, which made Cloversnap twist her neck the other way in a panic.
She returned her attention to Sirensea only after she was certain they weren't being monitored.
sirensea breathed out in quiet trepidation, her visage a mirror of cloversnap's nervous expression. too late, she rearranged her features into the same emotionless mask she had always worn, her gaze still water, unmoving and unmoved.
her eyes trailed cloversnap as the warrior scanned their surroundings as if for a threat, only seating herself when she seemed satisfied - even the action of sitting done with great care. sirensea forced herself to push away the worries she was coming dangerously close to justifying. despite herself, sirensea was letting cloversnap's apprehension get to her.
"i have had my concerns," sirensea admitted, her voice low and deliberately indistinct. the confession was almost freeing, but the very act of speaking and hearing her thoguhts made the danger, non-existent or otherwise, seem so much more real. "but i believe my clanmates are loyal." she wanted so badly to leave it at that - almost more than she wanted to know the truth.
"negative energy."huh. sirensea shouldn't have been taking cloversnap seriously, but a small and far too silken voice in the back of her mind insisted otherwise. "if someone were... out to get me, hypothetically, who do you think it would be?" the tension was broken somewhat by cloversnap's sudden jerk of her head - sirensea found herself jolting backwards before she realised it had been nothing but the wind.
It seemed even the cosmos were hinting at Sirensea that she was in the midst of trouble. 'She knows how adored she is, right?' If the she-cat was aware that she was admired, then the fact that she had worries scared Cloversnap even more. She sighed at the leader's next statement. "I'm sure you do." Her voice was hardly louder than a whisper. Trusting that the clan was loyal was like jinxing their actual loyalty. A betrayal was sure to follow if she continued with this mindset.
"Mhhmm." She hummed, looking at Sirensea with a gentle gaze. Cloversnap was slightly surprised at how much her words were considered. Most cats would laugh in her face and call her crazy.
The next question made the fur on her neck rise. She twitched her whiskers in thought, then slowly nodded as if she had come to a conclusion in her mind. "If I..." she stopped, scanning the clan quickly before going on, "if I say their name out loud, something bad will be more likely to happen." She paused for a few heartbeats, digging her claws into the earth. "But don't you fret. If I suspect danger, I'll come alert you that very second. I'll even fight the betrayer before they reach you."
cloversnap's voice was but a murmur, but what she said rang as coldly clear as leafbare had once been. more than ever, sirensea found herself noticing the little things - the quiet exhalations, the muted hums, the delicate ascent of fur. exasperation, assent, fear. the minutiae was but fragments of something bigger.
there was an odd kind of sense in cloversnap's lack of it. sirensea felt herself succumbing to suspicion once more. "i suppose you're right," she admitted, her tail coiling behind her if only to keep itself from being aquiver. "it isn't safe to speak of such things here."
a slow smile spread on her features at cloversnap's assurance. "that'd be appreciated," sirensea whispered. she would not sleep easy tonight, but she would feel better now she was somewhat certain of the warrior's allegiance to her.
"how are you finding mentorship?" she would question, more wondering how compatible cloversnap and crowpaw were as mentor and apprentice than anything. strangely, though it was proof of her competence she sought, she was curious about aspects of cloversnap's life.
Cloversnap smiled softly, trilling a faint purr at the leader's appreciative words. "Of course." Her smile faded as she focused on the clan around them once more. It was hard being happy when suspicion lurked at every corner. 'Do the other clans radiate this ambiance too?'
She hummed thoughtfully while she thought about Sirensea's question. Mentorship was fun so far. It was better than sitting in the camp all day, or hunting only to bring back a measly snack. Teaching a younger cat felt like she was contributing something. "It's going well. I fear Crowpaw is too polite for his own good, though." She hoped he was only that way around her. If he was that nice all the time, he'd surely get taken advantage of. "What about you? How's Roosterpaw?"
