Skyfang glanced off into the distance and felt the breeze ruffle his fur. Thank Cloudclan he had a lot of fur. It could get chilly up here. At least I can enjoy the view. The other clans lack our advantage of the mountains. We can always see them coming. He felt proud and strong looking at the land round him. This whole area was laid out for them by their mighty ancestors who have no left them. Funny how things work. Of course he knew what it was like to be abandoned just as the ancestors did in turn to the clans. He had duties to attend to such as hunting. He scented the air. The usual mouse, a quick meal. He crouched down to sneak up on it staying light on his feet, ready to pounce.
the wind was but a zephyr, slivers of something whole and unseen drifting down only to tug at the the tousled tufts that twined to form his fur, and the body beneath. it was cold, but lupinepaw felt nothing. as much as the fur that sheathed his form was an inconvenience, he was usually thankful for it.
right now, this wasn't the case.
it felt as though the feather-like fur clinging to his skin was leaden, weighing down his every step. even as his journey of the territory neared its completion, the mountain remained stubbornly vast and his paws stubbornly affixed to the ground, dragging along earth and rock alike with no regard for efficiency. at last the apprentice found himself at the summit of the territory, dull grey eyes gazing at nothing and everything.
it was then his gaze fell upon skyfang, whose body was lowered in a crouch as if hunting. common sense had lupinepaw fall silenter still, his only movement the parting of his jaws to scent their surroundings. a rodent, of some sort. though he was no hunter, lupinepaw tensed, muscle, sinew, and bone pulling together in preparation should skyfang's attempt at a catch fail.
He pounces feeling like a bird he flies through the air toward his target. It only realizes his presence when he is almost on top of it. He snags it and with a quick ill-bite he has it. H as done it. More food for the clan. He whirled around a he picked up another scent: a cat. By a quick glance the Tom before him appeared quite young. He was not exactly old himself. He pushed the mouse before him. "What brings you out here?" He knew he had seen this cat before, but a name failed to cross his mind. "Remind me of your name again." The Siberian looked around at the area nearby. Of course there was the giant bird from the two-legs. A flying monster. Now it was being reclaimed by Iceclan. He was tempted to dart into the wreckage to get out of the wind, but he decided against it.
tinged a sleepy gold by the sun, grey eyes traced the movement of muscle contracting and expanding beneath thick fur. lupinepaw's gaze followed skyfang as the tom leaped forward, flitting down to the unfortunate mouse just as its life was brought to an end. something like awe filled the apprentice at the ease at which the older tom had killed it.
"that was a nice catch there. i'm lupinepaw," the tom said shortly, his tail arcing out behind him in one brisk movement. he regarded skyfang with speculating, storm-hued eyes, a slight twist to his muzzle. "i've been all over the territory. i'm trying to improve my stamina."
lupinepaw said nothing of the exhaustion that had come about as a result, but it was blatant. he was lethargy embodied, grey eyes dull not just in colour but in expression, even his pupils remaining stubbornly inert, cast not at skyfang, the sky, or the ground, but some distant point on the horizon.
but slowly, as if it had been inevitable, his gaze trailed towards the monster beside them. it was a strange creature, almost avian in nature if only due to its possession of wings - wings far too vast, far too straight, far too stiff to belong to a real bird. the wind, once but a whisper, was starting to become stronger and sharper, pulling at his fur as if in attempts to prise it from his skin.
"after you," muttered lupinepaw, showing no indication of his planning to move. frighteningly vacant eyes flickered in the vague direction of the bird-like monster.
The Siberian padded into the monster. It beat staying out in the wind. A howl of wind whipped behind him as he stepped inside the wreckage. "You seem tired. Come in and rest. The wind very well may die down." He looked the young apprentice up and down. The grey eyes on Lupinepaw definitely showed signs of fatigue. He had the look of one who had been traveling. He wan't exactly high on energy selfish. He offered the mouse to the apprentice before him. I'm Skyfang. You should eat it will help." He could catch more later. The monster wouldn't eat them.. would it? He had never been inside it. The wind made strange noises against the metallic side of the beast. While odd noise unnerved him, he tried to relax the best he could. He sat down and stared out at Lupinepaw, waiting for him to come inside.
you seem tired. any attempt at concealing his exhaust collapsed. the tail dragging behind his body a silent indicator of his lack of energy, lupinepaw gladly followed the warrior into the ruins of what had once been a monster. the grey-eyed apprentice glanced about in a wary sort of way, as if he didn't trust even their surroundings.
lupinepaw simply nodded, a single, slight bob of his head that skyfang might or might not have seen before digging into the rodent. he was almost halfway through when he forced himself to stop, slowly pushing away the remains of the fresh-kill as if it pained him, or if he was a marionette whose strings were controlled by a particularly reluctant puppeteer.
the tom grimaced, not from distaste for the mouse but for his behaviour. "sorry," he muttered, painfully aware that the clan didn't have enough to eat as it was. his ears twitched as a hollow screech sounded, falling flat only to rise again when he realised it was simply the wind.
embarrassed, he turned away from skyfang, straining silver eyes to stare at the view below. "d'you think cloudclan's still out there?" it was a feeble attempt at a conversation starter, if anything, but a part of lupinepaw was genuinely curious. the skies were all but empty, yet there were still cats who thought that their ancestors had not abandoned them. there were still cats who believed. lupinepaw almost envied them.
The Tom frowned. He was surprised by the reaction Lupinepaw had at his own ravenous behavior. These were trying times and he did not blame the apprentice. The Siberian took a polite bite of the mouse and pushed the remains back toward Lupinepaw. "Finish it. I am ok." He was starting to relax. As for Cloudclan that topic was particularly divisive. He tried to avoid it when he could. "I have no idea if they are. I have no proof either way. I would say at best they're hiding for some reason at worst they are gone." In reality he was a realistic and recognized that if they were out there, their ancestors were doing themselves no favors. It could be worse. At least they wrren't entirely doomed. Some prey ran. What was most dangerous were the attitudes of the various clans.
