Now, Goldenleap was not the lazy good for nothing that the clan thought he was. He knew it. He didn't bother trying to change anyone's minds.... The last time he'd put any effort into something like that had been back when he was an apprentice. Now while he didn't really do anything to dissuade anyone's assumptions, sometimes he just.... Genuinely wanted to relax.... Even if it fed the false view everyone had of him.... He sometimes needed down time.
He was currently lounging around in a quiet corner of camp, seemingly rather comfortable where he was curled up. He appeared to be taking a nap, and he imagined that if anyone was watching they'd probably judge him. Eh, oh well. He'd long since passed the point of caring. He just really needed this......
Bramblepaw could hear the murmurs of his IceClan clanmates around him, muttering some words he couldn't catch, and others that just made him sigh again and again. Of course, whenever Goldenleap was around being lazy, someone just had to say something. It wasn't enough that the warrior was just there, clear enough to see, but to also draw attention to the cat with the apparent lowest amount of energy? After hearing enough bad comments for most of his life, as IceClan was a pretty small clan, Bramblepaw was thoroughly annoyed.
The magpie was finished, and the dark brown tabby's firefly eyes glanced once more to the warrior. Why didn't he try harder to protect his image and reputation? It just didn't make any sense. For Bramblepaw, his entire life was dedicated to painting himself as a great cat, and that wasn't an easy task at all. He couldn't relate, or even slightly understand the warrior called Goldenleap.
Honestly, Goldenleap was probably just a burden, wasn't he? If Bramblepaw was leader, he would've driven him out ages ago, or punished him harshly.
Don't worry, Goldenleap. The apprentice sneered to himself mentally, standing up and disposing of his lunch, before starting to pad his way towards the lazy cat. At least someone cares about you a bit-- meet the kind Bramblepaw!
Yes, there was something amusing in the fact that perhaps one of the only nice cats to Goldenleap was a fictional character.
"Hey, uhm." Once he was close enough, Bramblepaw started to talk, making sure he looked a little awkward and a little sincere. "Goldenleap? Do you maybe want to go hunting with me?"
The kind Bramblepaw would of course try to pull the lazy warrior off his rump to try and help!
Even with the realization this energy could be put to so many other things. But well, who doesn't respect someone like me?
Goldenleap barely lifted his head at Bramblepaw's approach. Oh, seeing as Iceclan was small and it was rather important to do so.... Everyone knew each other. Knew each other's name, and the general clan opinion pretty much. So.... What did Goldenleap know of Bramblepaw, hm? Bramblepaw seemed like a nondescript and insignificant apprentice. He was one of the fortunate ones who actually got to live. Personally, Goldenleap was surprised he hadn't been killed in his kithood. By chance, he'd lived to where he was now. Now.... Where was he? Oh yes. Bramblepaw. Now hm.... What did the clan think of him? It was practically a polar opposite to how they looked at Goldenleap. Oh, beloved, honorable Bramblepaw was a shining beacon of potential and goodness. It honestly didn't interest Goldenleap that much, and he thought that Bramblepaw sounded boring. He didn't know the apprentice personally, since well......
Cats didn't like Goldenleap spending time with young malleable minds, lest his laziness rub off on them. Though really.... It didn't surprise him.
Unfortunately for Goldenleap, Bramblepaw approached, and given that Goldenleap already shifted.... It was obvious that he was awake. Though, with every movement it didn't appear like he was too engaged. He moved slowly, and seemed to be slowly blinking sleepiness out of his eyes. His movements certainly didn't seem urgent or particularly calculated. Yeah, no he looked like he really just didn't give a rat's tail about anything.
Goldenleap slowly blinked at the young apprentice. Then he snorted. "Nah." He said, before making a show of yawning, and seemingly getting comfortable again. Usually when other cats were kicking Goldenleap to get working, they were much more aggressive about it. He wasn't going to budge for this shrimp.
Bramblepaw wished he could throw this pathetic scrap off a mountain. All the rumors and comments about Goldenleap were confirmed true in his mind, even if this slight interaction hardly proved anything but that he was tired. Here he was, trying to lend a paw, and was oh so rudely told to piss off in the least amount of respect possible.
But, the dark tabby tom took the smallest of breaths to calm himself. He didn't show a hint of his anger or disapproval. Instead, he reformed the image of awkward Bramblepaw into one of hurt and near defeat. As if someone had kicked his favorite toy into a bottomless gorge.
"B-but...." he stuttered quietly, golden eyes dropping to his paws. He dragged a claw against the dirt, before shooting a quick look over his shoulder as his other clanmates, and then returning his attention onto the warrior. Drawing a little closer, Bramblepaw started to whisper like the concerned and caring apprentice he was. "Cats are talking bad about you. I-I thought maybe we could go hunting, and then they'd... I-I mean, I know you like to sleep, Goldenleap. But maybe they'd be nicer if... well, it was just...."
Now he was looking like a kicked puppy, ears drawn back and lightly scuffing up the dirt with his right paw. "It was a dumb thought, I'm sorry. But we could... If I ask loud enough and we just leave, they'll believe us. And you don't actually have to hunt with me. We can go find a nice place to relax, if you want. They wouldn't know any better. B-but maybe that's a dumb thought, too, sorry...."
Oh come on, you ungrateful burden! Bramblepaw snarled in his head, wishing he was strong enough and bold enough to teach Goldenleap a lesson himself! Stop looking like a fat kittypet, and start acting like an IceClan warrior! Or I swear to StarClan when I become leader, you're the first one to go, fish-brained.

Guilt-tripping was a new tactic. Goldenleap was more familiar with being ignored or insulted, or otherwise being treated with aggression. But never had someone acted so pathetically in an effort to spark him into motivation.... Though, he supposed it was simply Bramblepaw not having much in the way of a backbone. From what he'd heard, he doubted this kid even knew how to lie.
Goldenleap had lifted his head up again, gazing at Bramblepaw. He appeared to be paying the bare minimum of attention, still not really interested in Bramblepaw.... But really he was just.... Ugh. This was a pitiful display. Wasn't Bramblepaw supposed to be some rising star of Iceclan? If the kid ever found himself in a skirmish, would he actually turn out to be made of tougher stuff, or would he begin shaking like a leaf caught in the wind? It probably wouldn't take long to find out, honestly. In this day and age, the next skirmish never seemed to be far off from the last one. Tensions ran high between the clans as per usual, and they'd inevitably start fighting with their neighbors, accusing each other of swiping the already limited and stretched thin resources of medicinal herbs and prey.
But really..... Ugh.... Goldenleap let out a long groan. He moved as if his paws were heavy, but he smoothly made his way to his feet. He let out another yawn, as he leaned forward to stretch out his back, his tail lazily waving all the while. He certainly looked like he was taking his time. He rolled his eyes. "..... Cat always talk bad about me. It's not your problem." He said. Bramblepaw probably was too young to know... But they always talked ill of him. Even when he'd been a tiny kit in the nursery who couldn't even contribute properly to the clan, they'd badmouthed him. It was simply his life. Not that Bramblepaw knew or would ever know that it really didn't matter what Goldenleap did. He let out a long, deep sigh. "But sure. I could use some quiet." He said.
He already was beginning to walk out, out towards the exit. He sometimes heard jeers and cackled remarks that he was so heavy, he could barely support himself as he walked. Though.... It wasn't really true. Goldenleap was graceful as any on his feet. Many called his name ironic but it really.... Wasn't. Just... Why was he still here if he wasn't as competent as any other warrior? At least Flightfoot seemed fair and seemed to like him for some weird reason.
Of course, stabbing someone with guilt was always the best way to go if one wanted to preserve their goody-two-shoes self image. Bramblepaw had wondered if it would even work for a mere moment. Goldenleap sure wasn't showing himself to be anything but predictable, and he predicted the warrior to scoff and snuggle deeper into his paws. But like most normal cats, it wasn't easy to turn down a seemingly friendly, caring apprentice you'd just broken the heart of seconds prior.
Victory tasted sweet, but only until Bramblepaw really understood what he had signed up for, as he watched Goldenleap take his time in standing up. In. Standing. Up.We're literally leaving camp to nap. Great StarClan, I want to strangle this good for nothing for wasting my time.
Remember, Bramblepaw! he sneered in a sickeningly sweet tone to himself when the warrior had finished talking. The kind-hearted apprentice is always there to help a clanmate out!
Sometimes, he hated himself more than others. And that was saying something. Everyone was frickin' annoying.
"I wish they didn't." Bramblepaw meowed with the faintest of pouts, walking alongside Goldenleap as they left. His snout was turned downwards and angled left, though the dark tabby apprentice made sure to watch where he was going. "I mean, I don't know you very well, Goldenleap... but it's not like you're some mean bully. A-as far as I know. So I don't get why they say anything...."
I really wish they didn't because the same lame jokes aren't any funnier than the last hundred times anyone said them.
Really, at times, insulting Goldenleap was more than enough entertainment for Bramblepaw to listen in on. But the same comments, over and over again, for the rest of his life? It just got old. Because, oh StarClan you won't believe this one, Goldenleap was lazy! Let me remind everyone of that every single day!
No. Just, no. It was annoying. And it was mostly this lazy tomcat's fault.
{ trust me, if this site wasn't tempting for little children, Bramblepaw would use a lot more cuss words and it'd be a lot more vulgar/funny to read. 😂😂

Goldenleap briefly wondered if Bramblepaw had met the cats he happened to share a biological mother with. Their comments tended to be ah.... More creative than the rest of the clan. After all, they believed he killed their mother. Of course, he did his best to limit his interactions those unsavory cats.... He refused to think of them as family. As far as he was concerned.... There had only been one cat he could call family, and would you look at that? She's dead. He hated especially the stupid things that came from cats' insensitive tongues when she'd died. It was like they didn't have hunting to do, like tormenting Goldenleap was infinitely more important.
On a day to day basis, Goldenleap didn't really give off the impression that any of it bothered him. He liked it better that way. Eventually, the comments tended to fade in general, and then they got really uncreative and easy to ignore, because they all sounded like a broken record. It was easier to cope with. That didn't mean he enjoyed it, but Goldenleap wasn't in the habit of enjoying things. It was funny how cats take a little thing like joy for granted. No one seemed to believe Goldenleap deserved such a thing.
Goldenleap made sure that he was leading the pair. He took a leisurely pace, though if Bramblepaw was paying attention, he might be able to figure out that Goldenleap was leading them somewhere specific.... Or maybe not. Maybe he was too green an apprentice, or he'd be hopelessly distracted. It wasn't Goldenleap's problem. ".... There are some cats you could ask and they would tell you." He snorted as he padded on forward. "They in particular love to complain about me." He said, even as he didn't actually name who this 'they' was. 'They', of course, were his half-siblings who all hated the fact that he existed.
Goldenleap seemed to be leading Bramblepaw to elevated ground, and the ground underneath them began to slant.
Bramblepaw didn't show any sign that he noticed Goldenleap had taken the lead, besides taking an easy pace a few mouse-tails behind. Although a part of him burned with the need to act as a leader, the dark tabby tomcat had to remind himself that he was still just a young apprentice. Goldenleap was a warrior, moons older than he was, and would likely not appreciate a disrespectful youngster calling him slow.
Where they were heading was a bit more confusing. Sure, Bramblepaw was a little bit more mature than the average cat his age, if you don't count his persona... but that didn't mean he was wise. The territory of IceClan wasn't as easy to progress through as say, the camp itself. Even if Bramblepaw could find his way to the Firefly Chasm with relative ease, that mostly stemmed from repeated journeys to that landmark. Everyone else was kind of... gray.
So no, he didn't know where they were going just yet. Not that he'd say anything. And no, he had little if any idea as to who Goldenleap was referring to.
Probably at some point, he'd heard sharper complaints from a few specific clanmates about the warrior. But the truth of the matter was, Bramblepaw didn't care. Goldenleap's history could go take a nose dive off the Firefly Chasm. All he needed to know, was that the warrior was lazy, a burden, and discussed with negativity. So whoever he held grievances with hardly mattered.
"...Why don't you stop them?" Bramblepaw knew what question he wanted to ask, and he knew he had to take an excessive amount of stuttering to ask it. "I-I mean, not like, stop them stop them. Just, well... everyone kinda sorta mentions you being, uh, sleepy!" He expressed the last word with enough energy to show he was relieved he didn't have to use the word lazy. "So if you were to be, uhm, more awake? They might start complimenting you instead and then, just... good things from there?"
Ugh. Why do I even care for why he's a piece of fox-dung? the apprentice hissed mentally. Not like Goldenleap was important to his life. Honestly, I bet IceClan would mark me as a hero if I made him disappear.
But that was a thought for another day.

Goldenleap, if Bramblepaw was paying attention, was leading the pair to elevated ground. Goldenleap, as lazy as his pace was, thought they seemed to be making good progress. After all, they weren't in any hurry, and weren't expending much extra energy in travel time. Say what they will, Goldenleap knew where his strengths lay, he just didn't feel a need anymore to prove it, because it just never was enough for any of them. Anyway, he supposed he'd be showing a little to Bramblepaw.... Mostly to get the apprentice off his back. He didn't particularly like or feel impressed by Bramblepaw. He personally didn't see anything particularly special in Bramblepaw.
Then Bramblepaw asked a question he didn't hear all too often. Probably because little to no one cared. Though, really... It just showed Bramblepaw's naivety, at least if you asked Goldenleap. Bramblepaw did not understand the nature of cats, and that was why he didn't already know the answer to his question. Goldenleap snorted. "They call me lazy and deadweight to my face. You don't need to be polite. No one else is." He said, though he didn't actually sound very offended. He didn't answer Bramblepaw's question at first. There were several long moments of silence, and Bramblepaw might've assumed that Goldenleap was ignoring him. In reality, Goldenleap was mulling over how to answer. He didn't want to spill his guts about it, but he still wanted to give some kind of answer. "Cats are surprisingly blind when they hate the facts." He said.
Because they were. Goldenleap didn't laze about camp like an elder, dead weight that was better off being killed for the good of the clan. Goldenleap brought his fair share of prey in. He followed orders like the other warriors. Sure, he spent his free time relaxing.... But honestly, that was expected of him. He just.... Stopped trying to fight it. So, after his work was done, he just sat around, doing exactly what they expected him to. Granted, it did help the insults get more uncreative and quite frankly stupider. The only one who seemed to understand that Goldenleap actually put work in had been Rainscales. Flightfoot seemed to know, strangely enough but.... Flightfoot seemed to be the exception.
Quite depressing, but Goldenleap was used to it.
Goldenleap let out a deep sigh. They were almost there. Just a little further.
Bramblepaw's ears flattened at the harsh honesty Goldenleap admitted to, biting his lip and looking conflicted-- it took all his willpower not to bust out laughing. Now that would have ruined his image, so he went for a more pained expression, and pulled it off pretty decently. Not that Goldenleap would have looked, still, he should usually keep up his act.
"Sorry." he gave a low apology.
But that was it. Goldenleap didn't say anything after that. What, he's just not going to answer my question? the dark tabby thought, wanting to scowl towards his back. When he was certain Goldenleap wasn't looking, he pulled an angry face and stuck his tongue out childishly, but then the kind Bramblepaw was back with his concerned appearance. Whatever, fox-face!
Wasn't like he'd be the one to break the silence, so Bramblepaw kept walking. He took note of his surroundings. Seems they were going up the moutain. Hmm, wouldn't Goldenleap be too lazy to make such a climb? Whatever.
The dark brown tabby apprentice flicked an ear when Goldenleap started to speak, watching the warrior with a sidelong glance and keeping his muzzle pointing off to the side. For a moment, he wondered what he was talking about. Was he still on the subject from a bit before? What, he's not only slow physically? It takes him ten years to respond fully? Plus, why did that last bit matter? Cats were blind? To what facts?
Ugh, now Bramblepaw was just frustrated.
"What do you mean?" he asked in a careful voice. If you take another fifteen years to give me an answer, and not same vague garbage fox-dung, I'll push you back down the mountain, flea-bag! It certainly sounded tempting. Then he'd be rid of his lazy, annoying, frustrating cat.
