So you found this site.
You looked around.
You made an account.
What now?
First, choose one account to be your main account. This is where you do all your socialising and out of character discussion. You should create a new account for every character you make. That way, no one gets confused with who's who. Be sure to post the in character stuff in the in character boards, and your out of character stuff in the out of character boards!
You might want to customise your profile a little bit. Nothing too big at first, but just enough to get you noticed in a crowd. Some people choose to start with their display name. Your display name is one of the first things people see, and you want to make a good impression. It can be found in Edit Profile > Personal. No scrolling required - it's one of the first fields!
If you're using your account to play a character, change your display name to whatever your character is called. If your character is a Clan cat, make sure it's realistic! Not sure whether your chosen name is acceptable? Just shoot me a personal message and I'll let you know.
Now that you have a name, you might want a picture to go with it. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, which, if it's true, means that a picture is worth a lot of Fresh-kill! To change your avatar, simply go to Edit Profile > Avatar. It'll already be open if you edit your profile. You can upload a picture from your computer, or paste in a link. You'll get the same result: an avatar to go with your name!
Once you've done a little customisation, you can venture into the wild. If you wanna break the ice a bit, try typing up a short intro in the Introductions board. It won't be too long till you get a response, and you'll feel better getting to know the community out of character. And with introductions off the agenda, you can finally start roleplaying!
There are four Clans: IceClan, FireClan, TreeClan, and RockClan. A quick look at the board descriptions should give you a good idea of what they're like. Once you've chosen, all you have to do is post a thread. You can make your character a newcomer of the group, or make out that they've been there all along. It's completely your choice.
All accounts automatically start out as kits. Don't worry, there's an easy way out. Simply request a post count change here, and a member of the staff will increase your account's post count to whatever you want (within reason). The more posts you have, the older your character is. You can check what age is correlated with a certain post count here!
Once you have enough posts to become the next rank, post in your Clan's ceremony requests thread using the correct form. Your Clan leader will make a thread where they will hold a ceremony for you and once you post there you can change your display name to your character's new name. If requesting a warrior ceremony, you can (but don't have to) suggest a warrior name for your character. Ultimately, however, your leader decides what your warrior name will be.
—— deathclan
There's one more Clan: DeathClan. They're not a true Clan, simply taking on the name of one as a form of mockery. They are just as powerful as a Clan, but not nearly as organised, and are far more violent. The DeathClan mentality is very much survival of the fittest, and they will cast out those they deem weak, whether physically or mentally. However, they prioritise cold logic and lethal cunning over brute force, and are surprisingly capable of compassion on rare occasions. Still, they are ruthless and will resort to almost any means to get what they want. All too often this is the destruction of the Clans.
If your character is in DeathClan, the youngest they can be is six months, unless they have non-NPC parents - in which case, they can be a kit. DeathClanners younger than 12 months are referred to as younglings.
There are only three ranks in DeathClan: leader, Royal, and Peasant. Most DeathClanners are Peasants, with only an elite few being promoted to Royalty. These are cats who have proven their worth to DeathClan and loyalty to the leader time and time again, and hold a considerable amount of power and respect. However, the leader is deemed superior to all.
Want to join DeathClan? Change your display name to a one-part name and join the Peasant group. To do this, simply go to Profile > Groups, scroll down until you see it, and click 'join this group'.
—— rogues, loners, and kittypets
You don't have to join a Clan, of course.
You can be a cat outside of the Clans: a rogue, a loner, or a kittypet. Rogues tend to live alone, away from other cats and Twolegs, and look down upon the Clans and their customs. They're distrusting, hostile, and can be aggressive to the point of violence. Loners are similar to rogues in that they don't belong to a Clan or Twoleg, but they are more passive than rogues. Loners are also typically more amiable and more willing to depend on other cats or Twolegs for survival. Often, they have their own home, instead choosing to wander wherever they please.
Kittypets live with Twolegs, and depend on them for food, water, shelter, and care. Though there are exceptions, kittypets are usually easygoing and incompetent hunters and fighters.
Want to be a rogue, loner, or kittypet? Just change your display name to an appropriate name; these cats don't have two-part names unless they are former Clan cats. Rogues, loners, and kittypets start off six months old and are considered adults when they reach 100 posts. Go to Profile > Groups and join either the Rogue group, the Loner group, or the Kittypet group.
You don't even have to be a cat! That's what the Woodlands are for, after all. To play a wolf, change your display name to whatever you see fit and go to Profile > Groups to join the Wolf group.
In the Woodlands, anyone can make a pack. Once that pack is deemed active enough, you can request a custom-made sub-board for your pack to roleplay in here. If the pack falls inactive for too long, the board will be removed.
There's not much more that needs explaining. If you're confused, you can check out the other threads in the Need to Know board, post any questions you have in the Help board, or just send them to me! Don't worry, I don't bite. At least, not out of character.
