you could see it - sense it. it was that tangible. though the tom's fur was soft, as if spun from silk and smoke, beneath it was muscle, sinew, and the steady seethe of hot blood surging through hotter veins. like a moth to a flame was lupinepaw to battle. only, unlike an insect, he was very much aware of what he was doing.
"who's up for a fight? a practice one, of course." almost as if in jest, particular emphasis was put on 'practice', the word tautly enunciated. lupinepaw couldn't help but let a slight smirk tug at his muzzle, revealing sharp, ivory incisors. he was looking for a fight, and he was going to get one.
While built for power Irispaw liked to think herself a rather levelheaded cat. She liked to hold herself to the standard that words were sharper than claws and, if needed, things could always be talked to. It was safe to say that not all of her... accaintances held the same beliefs, not that she would ever be one to drop names.
Or maybe she would.
"Lupinepaw." It was impossible not to notice the tom cat and the mood that he was in. Irispaw fought the urge to bare her teeth in annoyance. "How are you?" She managed to keep her tone level and polite. The calico she-cat moved so she was relatively close to the other apprentice and sat down, neatly wrapping her tail across her paws.
grey eyes would blink at the courtesy in irispaw's calm, even tone. "irispaw," was the tom's response, automatically echoing his fellow apprentice, though he was not nearly as unfazed. his gaze as expressionless as he could make it, he regarded the she-cat with a new uncertainty.
a slight frown rested on his muzzle as the calico seated herself, tail resting demurely over her paws. "i'm... good - well." lupinepaw spoke haltingly, and, reluctantly, sat down beside irispaw, smoke-hued eyes flitting to her mismatched ones. "i, uh... how about you?"
This was a pleasing development, if unexpected. Huh. The friendly purr rose up in her throat as if uninvited. "I'm pleased to hear this." Not entirely a lie either. Lupinepaw might be one of the more... difficult clanmates to exist, but he was still a clanmate and that had to count for something.
"I'm doing well enough. Had to clean the elder's den earlier." The tip of her tail flicked a bit in annoyance. Not that she didn't appreciate the elders and what they've done for the clan, just... it could get rather disgusting.
lupinepaw started at irispaw's sudden purr as if it were something far more menacing. things had gone from an invitation to fight to pleasant conversation - an abrupt transition, but not a bad one. despite himself, a slight smile would quirk his muzzle at the she-cat's next words.
"aw, poor thing," the tom cooed, voice laced with sarcasm. yet his sardonic tone had been well-intentioned - well, as well-intentioned as lupinepaw could get. friendly, even. "did you at least get a story out of it? or maybe a tick or two to keep for yourself? you know, as a souvenir."
"Oh, I know. I've seen the darkest days of my life and may never recover." Her tone was quite theatrical, she even bowed her head as though in defeat. When Irispaw looked back over to the tom there was a soft smile.
"No stories today, and no traveling ticks. Though, there were many ticks that did face their end." Her mismatched eyes wandered over to the elder's den in contemplation, the smile gone. "Do you think we'll ever be like that?"
a soft chuckle escaped lupinepaw at the she-cat's feigned dramatics, one that curved his muzzle into a warm, slightly toothy smile. "so you weren't even rewarded for your efforts!" the apprentice exclaimed, grey eyes widening into an expression of mock horror. "those elders need to learn some respect."
the tom followed irispaw's odd gaze, trailing from the calico to the elders' den. a slight frown rested on his features at the question. he had never been one to dwell on the past, much less the future, cognisant only of the now and here. the apprentice had always thought that a good thing and now he was more convinced than ever this was the case.
"you'll never take me alive," lupinepaw said, his tone joking, yet unusually quiet. soft, even. quickly, vehemently, the apprentice shook his head, as if the force of the movement would allow him to regain his senses. "i mean, if i don't die in battle first... look, it's going to happen anyway, okay?" old age had never scared him more, and, though his voice was brusque, it was laced with faint fear.
May~Riin: Sorry, Skyy and Thin, I'm not sure where Nyx is, hopefully they'll return soon. I looked now and don't have the power to set up that stuff, does anyone else have that?? Might be because I'm a queen, but idk....
