This was pretty typical of him. What wasn’t typical of him was approaching the leader as soon as he caught sight of her. The only reason he did this was because he hadn’t seen her all day. He wanted to make sure she was doing well. ”Have you eaten?” He asked, sounding a little demanding. He stood stiffly in front of Foxfeather as he waited for an answer.

She supposed she could wander around the territory.... But wasn't she supposed to be available in camp? So, here she stayed for duty. Even if it was pretty boring. She could deal with a little boredom. Though, it appeared she wouldn't remain that bored for long.... Hopefully. Viperstrike.... Her deputy... Was rather severe and rough in terms of personality. She knew him as well as any clanmate, a bit more because he was her deputy. Though, she wasn't particularly personally close with him. She wasn't personally close with anyone nowadays, honestly. She flicked an ear, when Viperstrike demanded to know if she'd eaten. Admittedly, in times of extreme stress, Foxfeather could at times forget to eat, or lose some of her appetite. Generally, she remembered to eat because she needed her strength in order to be a good leader. Though... Sometimes she tried not to eat so much admittedly. It agonized her to see when kits were sacrificed to save who those could hunt. "Of course." She said. Viperstrike

If she had said no, he would have forced her to eat right then and there. Since prey was hard to come by, he wanted to make sure his leader wasn't too generous in letting her clanmates feed before herself. Viperstrike's gaze drifted over to the prey heap. It wasn't much of a heap at this point. Maybe he'd go on a hunt tonight. He moved his hard stare back to Foxfeather, watching her for a few moments before taking a seat by her side. Her company... wasn't as bad as others. Besides, if his clanmates saw him sitting with their leader, chances are they'd be less likely to approach. That was a huge plus. He sat still as a stone, content in the silence.

Think much about it. He was probably just happy to hear that the leader of Fireclan was properly presenting a strong front. She resisted the urge to snort. It wasn't like she needed any reminders. It was most of what she did these days.... Pretend she was stronger than she was. Mostly because she knew she had to.... But a smaller, bitter part of herself thought it was because no one would care, so why show even a shred of vulnerability? But those kinds of thoughts were selfish, so Foxfeather didn't think about them too often. Foxfeather watched Viperstrike as he silently took a seat next to her. She wondered what were his motives. He was hardly the epitome of friendliness.... Even if she respected his skills well enough to have named him deputy. She cast a glance skyward. There was a silence between them, except it didn't feel awkward.... Even if Foxfeather was reaching for the right thing to say. She supposed she could just respond to his inquiry. "..... S'pose you don't believe I can take care of myself." She said idly, though she didn't actually sound offended. Viperstrike

Even if he didn't want to admit it, deep down he had a strong need to take care of others. Making sure Foxfeather was healthy was a small way he could satisfy that. He wondered if he was bothering the she-cat. He didn't want to be. Then again, he figured Foxfeather was the type to say if something was the matter. But maybe he was wrong. Curling his tail around himself, he steadied his breathing and focused on the surrounding sounds.

She was still looking off the side, not looking at Viperstrike at all, as she thought about.... Him she supposed. She didn't think his response meant anything, other than.... She guessed he was just double-checking, or he didn't like being called out like that. She really couldn't know what it meant. She eyed Viperstrike finally, and wondered if she should just be blunt. "What do you think about the fact that out of every cat in Fireclan, I'm leader?" She asked, more or less tossing subtlety off a cliff. She supposed she didn't think that dancing around with pretty words would be a good way to get what she wanted from Viperstrike. .... Honestly, she should probably get to know her deputy better. Probably better if a leader and deputy could trust one another..... Viperstrike

He didn't respond to this. Viperstrike opened his eyes again and returned his attention to Foxfeather once she spoke. It was an easy question for him to answer. Personally, he thought she was an excellent choice as leader. Especially after the nightmare that had led before her. 'I don't know why she wants my opinion, though. I'm no one special.' "I think most are happily satisfied with you as leader." He said finally, keeping his voice low and monotone as usual.

That was..... A really unsatisfying answer. She wasn't sure why she expected anything different. Why would anyone tell their leader to their face anything negative about her leadership? They were all zealots or suck ups she guessed. She preferred if someone was.... Honest, with her really. She wanted someone to tell her if she was being stupid. Could Viperstrike do that? She glanced at him again. ".... Yeah." She sighed again. They seemed to either buy into the previous leader's crap or conveniently forgot what she's done in lieu of her being supposedly a breath of fresh air from her predecessor. "Mm.... He wondered what could be going on in her mind to cause this. Was it something he was doing? That seemed unlikely, as he wasn’t doing anything. Though maybe that was the problem. He turned his head, staring into the distance at her next words. ”I don’t talk to anyone personally.” He didn’t need anyone, and no one needed him. It wasn’t like it wanted things to be this way- it was just the truth. He looked at Foxfeather questioningly, as if to ask her the same thing back.

"Maybe that's something we should both change." She suggested softly, even as she gazed off in the distance, eyes away from Viperstrike. "Hm.... Don't you think a leader and deputy should be approachable....?" Foxfeather murmured thoughtfully. She thought about if the clan members she was supposed to lead didn't trust her, or didn't think they could speak to her about any matters. She did not want to be in the position where she'd have to cast suspicion upon the cats she was supposed to lead, because they didn't feel comfortable coming forward. No, better for Foxfeather to swallow her own qualms about talking to other cats and try to seem.... Kinder than Foxfeather figured she actually was. Unless all they respected was.... Strength and.... Foxfeather wasn't sure if she could deal with that. Having to bury herself deeper and deeper because she was the leader. Viperstrike
